State Wrestling: Fatima advances four to Class 1 boys semifinals

COLUMBIA -- The Fatima Comets advanced four wrestlers to the semifinals in Wednesday’s first-day action of the Class 1 boys wrestling state championships at Mizzou Arena.

Seniors Cody Strope and Tyler Kloeppel and sophomores Tucker Tune and Nolan Laux all clinched state medals with 2-0 starts to their state tournament.

Strope, making his fourth state appearance, opened with a 14-2 win by major decision against Tennison Nixdorf of Hamilton-Penney in the first round at 126 pounds. He then pinned Lathrop’s Paxton Quarles in 37 seconds in the quarterfinals.

Kloeppel clinched his first state medal with a 6-5 win against Marceline’s Andrew Griffin in the quarterfinals at 138, scoring a takedown in the final minute of the third period to secure the victory. He started his state tournament with another one-point decision, defeating Priory’s Aaron Parasch 3-2.

Tune started his state meet with a 4-2 win against Marceline’s Reece Shufflebean in the first round at 106. He followed that up with bonus points for the Comets, pinning Lathrop’s Donovan Walters in 4:00 in the quarterfinals.

Laux added to Fatima’s medal count with a pin in 2:52 against Centralia’s Tharton Harper in the first round at 120, then won a 2-0 decision on a third-period reversal against Hamilton-Penney’s Alex Martin in the quarterfinals.

The semifinals begin at 8 a.m. today.

• Tune (39-9) will face Gallatin’s Eli Sperry (36-1), who placed fourth at 106 last season.

• Laux (43-7) takes on Lathrop’s Garrett Beane (33-2), who won a state title at 106 last year.

• Strope (42-1) matches up against Father Tolton’s Christopher Ankenman (39-2), last year’s state champion at 113.

• Kloeppel (26-12) wrestles against North Callaway’s Lane Kimbley (43-2), a third-place finisher last year at 132.

Fatima’s fifth state qualifier, Ryder Herzing, ended his season with a 1-2 finish at 144.

Fatima is tied with Lathrop for seventh place in the Class 1 team standings with 38 points. St. Pius X: Kansas City tops the standings with 102 points, followed by Centralia (65), Father Tolton (63) and Brookfield (48) to round out the top four.


The Versailles Tigers moved on four of their 10 wrestlers to Day 2 of the Class 1 wrestling state championships.

Senior Tristin Gavette and junior Gage Judd both secured state medals with 2-0 records Wednesday.

Gavette, now a three-time state medalist, won both matches by fall at 285 pounds. He pinned Lone Jack’s Aaron McClellan in 1:29 in the first round and pinned Trenton’s Gavin Cagle in 2:21 in the quarterfinals.

Judd, who will get his first state medal in his third state appearance, won by fall in 1:56 against Valle Catholic’s Andrew Schilly in the 138 bracket. He then clinched his medal with a 7-5 win against Trenton’s Mason Rongey in the quarterfinals, rallying in the second period with a reversal and a two-point nearfall.

In today’s semifinals, Gavette (41-3) will face St. Pius X: Kansas City’s Kyler Kuhn (33-9), while Judd (37-9) takes on Father Tolton’s Grant Anderson (39-1).

Junior Drake Schmidt and sophomore Brandon Brewer both extended their stays at state by following a quarterfinal loss with a second-round wrestleback win.

Schmidt won by forfeit in the first round at 120, lost by major decision in the quarterfinals and pinned Adrian’s Carter Dumas in 3:14 in the wrestlebacks.

Brewer won by decision in the first round at 113, lost by decision in the quarterfinals and won by fall in :49 against Sherwood’s Wyatt Weekley in the wrestlebacks.

In today’s bubble round, Schmidt (44-7) faces Hamilton-Penney’s Alex Martin (36-8), who finished third at 113 last year, while Brewer (33-6) takes on Lawson’s Brayden Sullard (35-14). Both wrestlers need a win to clinch a state medal.

Ending their seasons with losses in the second-round wrestlebacks for the Tigers were senior Matthew Radefeld at 132 and senior Kane Rainey at 144. Both wrestlers went 1-2 at state, with Rainey winning by fall in the first round and Radefeld winning by forfeit in the first-round wrestlebacks.

Posting 0-2 records at state for Versailles were junior Jayce Mathis at 106, sophomore Coen Arment at 126, junior William Dobbins at 190 and sophomore Wyatt Burks at 215.

After Wednesday’s action, Versailles is in sixth place in the Class 1 team standings with 39 points.


South Callaway’s Eli Benningfield and Ethan Munford each posted 2-1 records Wednesday to advance to Day 2 of the Class 1 boys wrestling state championships.

Benningfield, a senior, won by fall in his first-round match at 190 pounds against North Callaway’s Casper Safranski, then lost by fall in the quarterfinals to St. Pius X: Kansas City’s Jackson Rotterman. In an elimination match, Benningfield kept his state tournament going with a 7-1 win against Zion Burrage of St. Mary’s: St. Louis in the second-round wrestlebacks.

Munford, a freshman, lost 6-1 in the first round at 165, then won back-to-back matches in the wrestlebacks. He won by fall in :18 against Summit Christian’s Jack Brownlee, then pinned Lathrop’s Jesse James in 4:30.

In today’s bubble round, Benningfield (39-8) faces Lathrop’s Remington Wolfe (18-12), while Munford (33-13) faces McCluer South-Berkeley’s Tre’Vyon Chatman (39-7).

Junior Ayden Munford ended his season for the Bulldogs with a 1-2 record at 157, winning by decision in the first-round wrestlebacks.

South Callaway is in 31st place in the Class 1 team standings with 12 points.


Tipton’s Dalton Doss and Paxton Pyle both finished with 2-1 records to lead the Cardinals on Wednesday at the Class 1 boys wrestling state championships.

Dalton Doss, a junior, got a first-period pin in the first round at 132 pounds, then dropped a 7-2 decision in the quarterfinals to Lone Jack’s Barrett White. He bounced back in the second-round wrestlebacks with a win by fall in 1:28 against Valle Catholic’s Conner Clanton.

Pyle, a freshman, was pinned in his first-round match, then recorded back-to-back wins in the wrestlebacks at 165. Doss won by fall in 1:49 against James Franklin of St. Mary’s: St. Louis, then won an 11-6 decision against Marceline’s Jagger Sportsman.

In today’s bubble round, Dalton Doss (25-6) faces Lift for Life’s Ethan Doss (21-4), while Pyle (36-15) takes on Palmyra’s Bradyen Pillars.

The Cardinals’ third state qualifier, freshman Cooper Doss, posted an 0-2 record at 138.

Tipton is tied for 32nd place in the Class 1 team standings with 11 points.


The California Pintos ended their season Wednesday at the Class 1 boys wrestling state championships.

Senior Kwynnon Duvall, junior Patrick Morrow and freshman Connor Farmer each had 1-2 records in the state tournament for the Pintos.

Morrow had the Pintos’ lone first-round win, pinning his opponent in the 126 bracket. In the first-round wrestlebacks, Farmer won by fall at 113 and Duvall won by decision at 165.

Posting 0-2 records were senior Alexis Anguiano at 285 and freshman Talyn Balsley at 106.

California finishes with eight points in the Class 1 team standings, which is tied for 35th place after Day 1’s action.
