Girls Basketball: St. Elizabeth 47, Jamestown 40

WARDSVILLE -- The St. Elizabeth Lady Hornets began their postseason Wednesday night with a 47-40 victory against the Jamestown Lady Eagles in the semifinals of the Class 1 District 9 Tournament at Blair Oaks High School.

The Lady Hornets are 2-0 this season against the Lady Eagles, also winning their Dec. 28 regular-season meeting 49-31 at Jamestown.

St. Elizabeth, the No. 1 seed in the district, held an 11-7 lead after one quarter, then poured in 16 points in the second quarter to lead 27-14 at halftime.

Jamestown battled with a 14-point third quarter, trailing 39-28 entering the fourth quarter. St. Elizabeth was held to one field goal in the final eight minutes, but the Lady Hornets were able to hold on for the seven-point victory.

St. Elizabeth’s Reagan Wobbe scored a game-high 27 points, making 10-of-13 free throws. Lauren Struemph was next in the scoring column with nine points, making a pair of 3-pointers.

Jamestown was led by Sydney Derendinger with 14 points.

Jamestown, the No. 5 seed in the district, finishes the season with a 19-7 record. It’s the Lady Eagles’ highest win total since they went 23-4 in the 2015-16 season.

St. Elizabeth (20-7) clinched its third-consecutive 20-win season with Wednesday’s victory. The Lady Hornets will face second-seeded Higbee (20-7) in the championship game at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Higbee, ranked No. 10 in Class 1, defeated third-seeded Community 64-44 in Wednesday’s second semifinal game.

The location of Friday’s title game has been changed to Blair Oaks High School.
