Southern Boone's Bergthold looks for Class 1 girls wrestling repeat title

Callie Bergthold is looking to go back-to-back.

The Southern Boone senior will try to close out her career with a second title at the Class 1 girls wrestling state championships, which take place today and Thursday at Mizzou Arena.

Bergthold, who qualified for state with a second-place finish earlier this month in the Class 1 District 2 Tournament, begins her final state tournament in the 120-pound bracket with a matchup against East Atchison’s Brooklyn Wennihan. First-round action begins at 1:15 p.m. today.

This will be Bergthold’s third appearance at the state tournament. She finished in third place in 2022 and won a state title last season, both in the 115-pound bracket.

Bergthold is one of five state qualifiers this season for the Lady Eagles. All five are returning qualifiers.

Addy Pasley (18-6) is also returning to state for a third time. The Southern Boone senior, who was runner-up at 155 in districts, faces Ste. Genevieve’s Anna Fischer (21-6) in the first round.

Pasley placed second in the state at 155 last season and first qualified for state in 2021.

Nova Porter (28-10), a junior who took fourth place at 115 in districts, begins her state tournament with a first-round match against Marshfield’s Carlynn Mynatt (44-6).

Zafaran Satterfield (16-11), a sophomore, placed second at 135 in districts. She will wrestle Lexington’s Mireya Gonzalez (23-4) in the first round.

Josey Uhrig (28-9), a senior, came in third place at 140 in the district tournament. She will face Sullivan’s Dorie Richardson (34-3) -- who placed sixth in the state at 140 last season -- in her first-round matchup.

Porter, Satterfield and Uhrig all made their state debuts last season. Porter finished 2-2 at 110, while Satterfield (125) and Uhrig (135) both had 1-2 records.

Southern Boone placed 11th in the Class 1 team standings last season. The Lady Eagles finished runner-up out of 33 teams earlier this month in the Class 1 District 2 Tournament, trailing only Brookfield, which was a state runner-up last season.

The California Lady Pintos have two wrestlers competing today in the Class 1 girls state championships at Mizzou Arena.

Camryn Wingate, a senior, will make her second straight appearance in the state tournament. She qualified for state with a third-place finish at 105 pounds in the Class 1 District 2 Tournament earlier this month.

Wingate (40-7) will face Rock Port’s Norah Watkins (32-3) in the first round, which is scheduled to start at 1:15 p.m. today. Wingate posted an 0-2 record at 100 in last year’s state tournament.

Ivy Scroggins will make her state debut for the Lady Pintos after finishing fourth at 170 in districts. Scroggins (35-14) takes on Pleasant Hill’s Alana Thelin (42-3) -- who placed fourth at 170 at state last season -- in the first round.

South Callaway’s Dalayna Hargis and Lilli Lewis will make their second trips to the Class 1 girls wrestling state championships today at Mizzou Arena.

Lewis (42-3), a senior, won an individual title at 190 pounds earlier this month in the Class 1 District 2 Tournament to qualify for state. She will face Excelsior Springs’ Adrien Crawley (27-17) in the first round, which is scheduled to start at 1:15 p.m.

Lewis made it to state last season in the 170-pound bracket, posting a 1-2 record in her state debut.

Hargis (32-4), also a senior, placed third at 120 in the district tournament to advance to state. She will wrestle Odessa’s Aaliyah Sanders (20-11) in the first round.

Hargis previously reached the 2022 state tournament, posting an 0-2 record at 110.

The Fatima Lady Comets and the Eldon Lady Mustangs each have one state qualifier in the Class 1 girls wrestling state championships.

Fatima senior Skyla Schroeder (38-6), a returning state qualifier, made it back to state after winning a title at 130 pounds in the Class 1 District 2 Tournament. Schroeder faces Oak Grove’s Morgan Clubb (30-17) in the first round, which starts at 1:15 p.m. today.

Schroeder had a 1-2 record at 135 in last year’s state tournament.

Eldon freshman Mallori Edwards (35-5) is making her state debut after placing second at 110 in the Class 1 District 3 Tournament. Edwards matches up against Kansas City Center’s Taiyahna Pruett (35-5) in the first round.

The Versailles Lady Tigers have a pair of wrestlers making their state debuts today in the Class 1 girls state tournament.

Junior Frankie Shewmaker (36-10) placed second at 125 pounds in the Class 1 District 3 Tournament to advance to state. She will face Chillicothe’s Yoo Lee (39-4) -- a state runner-up at 120 last season -- in the first round, which is slated for a 1:15 p.m. start today.

Mady Rayl (34-15), also a junior, finished fourth at 155 in districts. She opens her state tournament against Cameron’s Justice Brewer (32-3), the defending state champion at 155.
