PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Lincoln Blue Tigers dropped to .500 in MIAA men’s basketball play this season with a 75-56 loss Saturday to the Pittsburg State Gorillas.
The Blue Tigers got off to a good start, taking a 19-13 lead midway through the first half. Lincoln led by five at 23-18 after a Franck Yetna free throw with 5:43 remaining before halftime.
Pittsburg State then went on a 7-0 run to take the lead. DJ Richardson hit a short jumper to pull Lincoln into a tie at 25 with a little less than four minutes left, but Pittsburg State closed the half on an 11-4 run to take a 36-29 advantage into halftime.
The two teams traded points at the start of the second half, with a layup by Trey Boston getting Lincoln to within six points at 57-51 with a little more than eight minutes left.
But the Gorillas put the game away with a 16-0 run in the next six-plus minutes to make it 73-51. That was the biggest lead of the game for Pittsburg State.
Deshaun English and Jeramy Shaw had 20 points each for Pittsburg State (15-8 overall, 11-6 MIAA), while Jordan Frison added 13. English also pulled down 13 rebounds for the Gorillas, who finished 22-of-23 at the free-throw line.
Jose Roberto Tanchyn had nine points and 11 rebounds to lead Lincoln. Jamar Madge Jr., Richardson, Yetna and Arash Yaqubi all added eight points for the Blue Tigers. Lincoln was 5-of-10 at the free-throw line.
Lincoln (13-9, 8-8 MIAA) is back in action Thursday night at home against Fort Hays State. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Jason Gym.
In the women’s game Saturday, Lincoln fell 88-70 to Pittsburg State.
Pittsburg State staked its claim to the win early, jumping out to a 24-3 lead after one quarter. The Gorillas closed the quarter on a 15-0 run.
The Gorillas led by as many as 26 points in the second quarter, that coming at 32-6 a little less than eight minutes before halftime. Lincoln answered with a 10-2 run in the ensuing three minutes and trailed 45-25 at the half.
The teams traded points for much of the third quarter, which ended with the Gorillas holding a 66-50 lead.
The closest Lincoln got in the fourth quarter was 14 points.
Grace Pyle led four Pittsburg State players in double figures with 22 points. Karenna Gerber added 19, while Harper Schreiner chipped in with 12 and Macie Mays totaled 10 for Pittsburg State (18-5 overall, 12-5 MIAA).
Steph Torres finished with 22 points to lead Lincoln. AJ Bradley chipped in with 13 points off the bench, while Ashlyn Alloway added 10 points.
Lincol (6-16, 2-14 MIAA) will host Fort Hays State on Thursday night. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
