Girls Wrestling: Versailles takes sixth place in district

NEVADA -- The Versailles Lady Tigers placed sixth out of 34 teams in the Class 1 District 3 Tournament held Friday and Saturday at Nevada High School.

Versailles, which finished the weekend with a pair of state qualifiers, totaled 85.5 points in the district standings. Marshfield won the district team title with 210 points, propelled by eight state qualifiers, while Holden was runner-up with 130 points.

Frankie Shewmaker led the Lady Tigers with a second-place finish at 125 pounds in the district tournament. Shewmaker posted a 3-1 record, winning her first two matches by fall and then won her semifinal match by major decision. Shewmaker lost by fall in 3:16 to Warsaw’s Skylon Boone in the first-place match.

Mady Rayl also advanced to state for Versailles with a fourth-place finish at 155. Rayl ended the tournament with a 2-2 record, winning her first match by fall and win by decision in the bubble round. She lost by fall in 1:52 to Marshfield’s Trinity Lesser in the third-place match.

Versailles had four wrestlers end their seasons with a loss in the bubble round, falling one win shy of qualifying for state.

• Maiyah Hopper went 2-2 at 105 with two win by fall. She lost by fall in 1:59 to Monett’s Mary Jastal in the consolation semifinals.

• Fenia Christiansen had a 4-2 record at 110 with three wins by fall and one win in overtime. She lost by fall in 3:31 to Nevada’s Sydnee Baldwin in the bubble round.

• Adriana Ramos went 3-2 at 130 with three wins by fall. She was pinned in :39 by McDonald County’s Anjelika Alarcon in the consolation semifinals.

• Jesse Gresham finished 2-2 at 140 with a first-period pin and a win by decision. She lost by fall in :55 to Harrisonville’s Anjell Chiasson in the bubble round.

Also competing in districts for Versailles were Grace Brantley (2-2 record with one win by fall at 115), Olivia LaFoy (2-2 record with one pin at 120) and Leah Nugent (0-2 record at 135).

Shewmaker and Rayl will compete in the Class 1 state wrestling championships Feb. 21-22 at Mizzou Arena.
