Girls Wrestling: Southern Boone runner-up at districts, advance five to state

ST. CHARLES -- For the second straight season, the Southern Boone Lady Eagles qualified five wrestlers for the state championships, leading to a second-place finish in the Class 1 District 2 Tournament held Friday and Saturday at St. Charles West High School.

Southern Boone totaled 131 points, trailing only Brookfield in the 33-team district. Brookfield won the district team title with 153.5 points, qualifying six wrestlers for state.

Placing second at districts for Southern Boone were Callie Bergthold at 120 pounds, Zafaran Satterfield at 135 and Addy Pasley at 155.

Bergthold, who won a Class 1 state title at 115 last season, posted a 4-1 record in districts. Bergthold won her first two matches by first-period pin, then won by fall in the second period in her next two matches. Bergthold, a three-time state qualifier, dropped a 2-0 decision to Holt’s Cassidy Benwell in the first-place match, just her fourth loss of the season.

Pasley had a 3-1 record with two wins by fall, followed by a win by major decision to clinch her third state appearance. She lost by fall in 2:38 to Centralia’s Jayci Shelton in the title match.

Satterfield also finished 3-1 at districts, pinning each of her first three opponents for her second straight trip to state. Satterfield lost by fall in 3:30 to Sam Lage of Blair Oaks in the championship match.

Josey Uhrig will also return to state after placing third at 140 with a 3-1 record at districts. Uhrig won her three matches by fall, including a pin in 2:26 against Moberly’s Addison Orscheln in the third-place match.

Southern Boone’s fifth returning state qualifier is Nova Porter, who placed fourth at 115 in districts. Porter posted a 4-2 record with three wins by fall, then won a 10-0 major decision against Warrenton’s Alexis Ruff in the bubble round. She dropped a 4-1 decision to Mexico’s Katherine Bowen in the third-place match.

Those five Southern Boone wrestlers will compete in the Class 1 state tournament Feb. 21-22 at Mizzou Arena.

Addison Hinton and Kaylie Foreman both lost in the bubble round for the Lady Eagles, falling one win shy of qualifying for state.

Foreman finished 2-2 at 145 with two wins by fall, while Hinton went 1-2 at 100 with a first-period pin.

Other district wrestlers for Southern Boone were Moravia Satterfield (1-2 record with one pin at 130), Izzy Riley (0-2 record at 190) and Brooklin Demsich (0-2 record at 235).
