Girls Wrestling: Schroeder wins district title for Fatima

ST. CHARLES -- Skyla Schroeder became the Fatima Lady Comets’ first state-qualifying girls wrestler last season. This weekend, she became the Lady Comets’ first two-time state qualifier.

Schroeder became a two-time district champion with a first-place finish at 130 pounds Saturday, the second day of the Class 1 District 2 Tournament at St. Charles West High School.

Schroeder posted a 4-0 record in the district tournament, winning her first two matches by fall before winning 5-3 in overtime against Wright City’s Sadie Sehnert in the semifinals to clinch a state berth. Schroeder then won a 3-2 decision against Brookelynn Meeks of Blair Oaks in the first-place match.

Schroeder will compete for Fatima in the Class 1 state wrestling championships Feb. 21-22 at Mizzou Arena.

The Lady Comets’ other district wrestler, Heidi Struemph, came up one win shy of qualifying for state.

Struemph posted a 4-2 record at 115, winning four consecutive matches in the wrestlebacks, including two wins by fall. Struemph then lost 3-1 in overtime in the bubble round to Mexico’s Katherine Bowen, who handed Struemph her other loss in the first round.

Fatima tied Warrenton for 18th place in the 33-team district with 35 points in the standings. Brookfield won the district team title with 153.5 points.
