Girls Wrestling: California advances pair to state tournament

ST. CHARLES — Camryn Wingate qualified for state for a second straight season, leading the California Lady Pintos in the Class 1 District 2 Tournament held Friday and Saturday at St. Charles West High School.

Wingate took third place at 105 pounds in the district tournament, finishing with a 3-1 record. After losing her first match, Wingate won back-to-back matches by fall in the wrestlebacks to clinch a state berth. She then won a 7-1 decision against North Callaway’s Brooke Giboney in the third-place match.

Ivy Scroggins became a first-time state qualifier with a fourth-place finish at 170. Scroggins finished with a 3-2 record, winning three straight wrestleback matches by fall to secure a state berth. She lost by fall in 2:15 to Kirksville’s Madisynn Crawford in the third-place match.

Wingate and Fulks will compete in the Class 1 state wrestling championships Feb. 21-22 at Mizzou Arena. It’s the first time in program history the Lady Pintos have had multiple state qualifiers in a single season.

Bella Fulks had a 1-2 record with a win by fall at 135 for the Lady Pintos, while Ivee Cooper went 0-2 at 190.

California finished in 21st place in the district team standings with 33 points. Brookfield claimed the district title with 153.5 points.
