Prep Baseball: Fatima 4, Battle 2

COLUMBIA -- The Fatima bullpen tossed six scoreless innings Tuesday night, propelling the Comets to a 4-2 win in nine innings against the Battle Spartans.

Hank Stuckenschneider threw three innings of relief, finishing with two walks and two strikeouts. Sam Struemph was the winning pitcher, striking out three and walking one in the final three innings for the Comets.

Blake Kliethermes was the starting pitcher. In three innings, he gave up two runs on three hits with three walks and one strikeout.

Fatima struck first in the top of third inning, scoring a pair of runs on an RBI groundout from Easton Stuckenschneider followed by an RBI single from Matthew Robertson.

Brayden Groseclose hit a two-run single in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 2.

The score remained unchanged until the top of the ninth. Bryce Wieberg hit a one-out double, then Struemph walked and Graham Boeckmann singled to load the bases.

Max Stuecken broke the tie with a sacrifice fly to left field, then Struemph scored an insurance run on a fielder’s choice.

Battle’s first two batters reached base in the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Struemph got three consecutive outs to close the win.

Wieberg had two of Fatima’s nine hits, including a double for the game’s only extra-base hit.

Fatima (5-4), which is ranked No. 8 in Class 3, plays its next three games in the Missouri River Festival. The Comets next play Timberland at 6 p.m. Friday at Jefferson City High School.
