COLUMBIA -- The Lincoln Blue Tigers began their season Friday with a seventh-place finish in the women’s standings of the Larry Young Invitational, hosted by Columbia College at Gans Creek Course.
The Blue Tigers were seventh out of 11 teams with 165 points. William Woods won the women’s team title with 41 points, Missouri S&T was second with 64 points and Evangel was third with 68.
Doreen Onchangu led the Lincoln women, placing 18th out of 91 runners in the women’s 5K race with a time of 20:28.87.
Maria Diamond was next for the Blue Tigers, placing 27th in a time of 21:21.79. Shoneal Clarke-Giddings was 42nd in 22:45.52, followed by Shevanae Thomas (50th, 23:41.12), Nattesha Palmer (65th, 25:16.23), Shantea George (66th, 25:27.61), Denita Jackson (67th, 25:36.29) and Nehlia Mills (70th, 26:01.10) to round out Lincoln’s runners.
Missouri S&T’s Emma Puetz won the women’s race with a time of 18:10.21.
Lincoln will compete Friday in the Bearcat Classic at McKendree. It will be the Blue Tigers’ only regular-season competition that isn’t held at Gans Creek Course.
Mary Grover (Southern Boone High School) helped William Woods to a first-place finish in the women’s team standings. Grover, a senior, was the second-fastest Owl, clocking a 10th-place time of 19:42.00.
Freshman Sarah Kirby (Capital City High School) took 31st place for William Woods with a time of 21:38.36. Sophomore Myra Baker (Linn High School) was 37th in 22:23.96 for the Owls.
Columbia College freshman Taylor Yoder (Blair Oaks High School) took 41st place with a time of 22:38.09, helping the Cougars to a sixth-place finish as a team with 133 points.
In the men’s 8K race, William Woods senior Jenson Starr (Helias High School) came in eighth place out of 128 individuals with a time of 25:46.21. The Owls took third place out of 14 teams with 97 points.
Freshman Kyle Hagemeyer (Calvary Lutheran High School) finished 21st with a time of 26:45.52 for the Owls. Junior Dustin Russell (South Callaway High School) took 43rd in 27:30.07.
Missouri S&T sophomore Levi Frisbie (Blair Oaks High School) placed 60th with a time of 28:20.79. The Miners were runner-up in the team standings with 41 points, trailing Huntington (Ind.), which won the team title with 38 points.
Evangel junior Campbell Nichols (Russellville High School) took 74th place in a time of 28:56.49. The Valor was seventh as a team with 177 points.
Columbia College junior Grayson Knernschield (Helias High School) came in 75th place with a time of 28.57.92. The Cougars were fourth in the men’s team standings with 124 points.
Central Methodist junior Isaiah Barg (Calvary Lutheran High School) had a time of 33:19.82 to finish in 110th place. The Eagles were eighth as a team with 196 points.
