Class 2 softball Final Four team capsules

Here are capsule looks at Carrollton, Chaffee, Linn and South Harrison, who are competing in the Class 2 softball Final Four in Springfield:

CARROLLTON

Record: 21-4.

Head coach: Brian Pierson (78-20 overall, all at Carrollton).

Final regular season ranking: No. 8.

Notes: Carrollton enters the Final Four winning its last four and seven of its last eight games. … The Lady Trojans entered the Class 2 District 8 Tournament as the top seed in a seven-team district. After a first-round bye, Carrollton beat Summit Christian Academy 3-0, then blanked reigning Class 2 runner-up No. 6 Sherwood 2-0 to win the district championship. Carrollton beat No. 2 Mid-Buchanan 6-5 in the state quarterfinals. … Junior Jenna Edwards has led the Lady Trojans in the circle, throwing 118 innings for a 17-3 record and a 1.13 ERA with only 19 earned runs allowed. Edwards has struck out 216 and walked only 19. … Sophomore shortstop Taylor Pierson leads the Carrollton offense with a .539 batting average (41-for-76) with 15 RBI, four doubles, seven triples and a team-high 16 stolen bases. Edwards is the second-leading batter with a .463 average (38-for-82) with a team-high 28 RBI on nine doubles and two triples. Sophomore third baseman Emmy Lock has hit .458 (33-for-72) with 27 RBI, nine doubles, three triples and one of the team’s four home runs. Senior first baseman Raegan Schlueter is also near the .400 mark with a .397 batting average (23-for-58) with 13 RBI, four doubles and 10 walks. … This will be Carrollton’s first appearance in the Final Four. … Carrollton went 8-2 in Missouri River Valley Conference East Division play, placing second behind Holden.

CHAFFEE

Record: 21-6.

Head coach: Brian Horell (64-60 overall, all at Chaffee).

Final regular season ranking: Unranked.

Notes: Chaffee started the regular season winning five consecutive games, including four by at least nine runs, but finished the regular season 1-3 in its final four games. … The Lady Devils, the No. 1 seed in the Class 2 District 1 Tournament, received a first-round bye in the seven-team bracket, then defeated Saxony Lutheran 7-2 in the semifinal and beat Neelyville 6-0 in the district championship. Chaffee defeated No. 9 Iberia 8-7 in the state quarterfinals. … Freshman Carlyanne Cossou has been the Lady Devils’ workhorse in the circle, throwing 109⅓ of the team’s 152⅓ total innings for a 14-3 record. Cossou has allowing only 25 earned runs for a 1.60 ERA, while striking out 141 and walking 41. … Senior center fielder Ayne Held has led the Chaffee offense with a .487 batting average (37-for-76) with nine RBI, and a team-high 18 stolen bases. Junior Reese Van Pelt is second on the team with a .429 batting average (33-for-77) with a team-high 36 RBI, a team-high 11 doubles and one of the team’s three home runs. She also leads the team with 15 walks. Cossou is third on the team with a .425 batting average (34-for-80) with 10 RBI and 12 walks. Freshman third baseman Paizleigh Graham leads the Lady Devils with two home runs to go with her .400 batting average (30-for-75) and 40 RBI with nine doubles. … This will be Chaffee’s third Final Four appearance after taking third in 2015 and fourth in 2017.

LINN

Record: 24-6.

Head coach: Ryan Rost (49-47 overall, 23-6 at Linn).

Final regular season ranking: Unranked.

Notes: The Lady Wildcats won their final three regular-season games to enter the final four on a six-game winning streak. … Linn entered the Class 2 District 3 Tournament as the top seed. The Lady Wildcats earned a first-round bye in the seven-team tournament, then beat Russellville 20-6 in the semifinals and beat New Bloomfield 15-12 in the district championship. Linn used a six-run comeback to beat Elsberry 7-6 in eight innings in the state quarterfinal. … The Lady Wildcats’ have used a split in the circle, with sophomore Sophia Voss taking the majority of the innings at 114 this season with a 2.95 ERA. Voss has struck out 96 and walked 36 to earn a 14-5 record. Sophomore Ava Warren has covered the team’s other 56⅓ innings with a 2.12 ERA. Warren has compiled a 9-1 record with 40 strikeouts and 22 walks. … Freshman second baseman Kenzy Hackmann has a team-high .463 batting average (44-for-95) with 22 RBI, nine doubles, three triples and one of the team’s five home runs to go with a team-high 18 stolen bases. Freshman shortstop Ellie Dudenhoeffer is second with a .436 batting average (44-of-101) with a team-high 34 RBI, nine doubles and five triples. Voss is close behind with a .429 average (36-for-84) with 22 RBI, four doubles and two triples. … This is Linn’s first appearance in the Final Four since 2005 and third overall, with the Lady Wildcats finishing third in both 2005 and 1998. … The Lady Wildcats placed second in the Show-Me Conference with a 6-1 record.

SOUTH HARRISON

Record: 27-6.

Head coach: Aaron Fitzpatrick (221-145 overall, 72-19 at South Harrison).

Final regular season ranking: No. 4

Notes: South Harrison closed the regular season on a six-game winning streak, entering the Final Four with nine consecutive wins. … The Bulldogs entered the Class 2 District 6 Tournament as the top seed in a seven-team district. After a first-round bye, South Harrison beat Brookfield 11-5 and reigning Class 2 champion No. 5 Marceline 9-8 to win the district championship. No. 4 South Harrison then beat No. 3 Bowling Green 4-3 in the state quarterfinals. … Senior Hannah Carter has been the Bulldogs’ leading pitcher, throwing 147⅔ innings for a 22-5 record with a 1.71 ERA. Carter has struck out 182 strikeouts and walked only 21. … Carter is also the leading hitter on the team with a .372 average (29-for-78) with a team-high 32 RBI and three of the team’s 12 home runs. Freshman first baseman Ambrey Hunter is second on South Harrison with a .371 batting average (26-for-70) with 21 RBI, nine doubles, two triples and a co-team high four home runs. Senior second baseman Kiara Bennett is batting .383 (36-for-94) with 17 RBI and a team-high 28 stolen bases. Freshman third baseman Bailey Barnett is batting .342 (27-for-79) with 29 RBI, eight doubles and four home runs with a team-high 16 walks. … This will be South Harrison’s first trip to the Final Four. … The Lady Bulldogs went 6-0 in the Grand River Conference East Division to claim the conference championship.
