Jefferson City man charged with trespassing

A Jefferson City man was charged with trespassing after police encountered him about to allegedly start a fire in a building.

Shaione Jones was charged with first-degree trespassing.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement said officers responded to reports of a burglary in progress in the 100 block of Marshall Street on Monday night. A witness said he was watching the building, which is under renovation, and told Jones he was going to call 911 on him when Jones appeared.

Officers reportedly found a broken window and Jones inside with a bottle of lighter fluid near a pile of charcoal and ash. He had reportedly told officers earlier in the evening that he would be staying in an abandoned building overnight, and they tried to persuade him not to.

The probable cause statement said the number of building fires downtown increases during the winter months as people try to stay warm.
