Capital City, Helias girls tennis teams win district openers

The Capital City Lady Cavaliers and the Helias Lady Crusaders both won their postseason duals Monday in the first round of the Class 2 District 5 Tournament.

Capital City, the No. 2 seed, won 5-0 against seventh-seeded Raytown at Capital City High School.

In doubles, Sarah Wilde and Courtney Linhardt won 8-0, Megan Wilde and Manveeta Vuppala won 8-0 and Addyson Spencer and Brooke Ivy won 8-2.

Spencer won her singles match by forfeit, then Sarah Wilde won 6-0, 6-0 to clinch the dual win for the Lady Cavaliers.

Helias, the No. 3 seed, also won 5-0 against sixth-seeded Warrensburg at the Crusader Athletic Complex.

Catie Meystrik and Mary Lorang won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Sydney Drinkard and Izzy Struemph won 8-5 at No. 2 and Josie Francka and Jada Markway won 8-0 at No. 3.

In singles competition, Francka won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 position and Markway won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 to clinch the dual win for the Lady Crusaders.

Capital City (13-1) and Helias (11-4) will face each other in the district semifinals at 4 p.m. today at Capital City High School. In last month’s regular-season dual, Capital City defeated Helias 6-3.
