YOUR OPINION: Over the street decorations

Dear Editor,

One of the things that was both beautiful and caught people's attention were the over the street Christmas decorations. Every time I mention bringing them back, I get the same remark. "They were attached to the light poles, and we no longer have those light poles to attach them, too."

Okay, so people have told me what we can't do, so how about what we can do. Over the last several years, there has been advertisements that show up in my Facebook feed about telescoping flag poles. How about we have poles designed that can be hidden in the sidewalk when not in use and then extended to varying heights during a holiday or event. They could be placed along High Street, Capitol Avenue, several others and even Munichberg.

The poles would have electrical connections and whatever decorations that are needed could be attached and powered. Christmas would have the boughs of evergreens filled with multicolored light, with bells, candles and wreathes in the center. Halloween could have boughs of fall leaves filled with purple and orange lights, with ghosts, flying witches and skeletons in the center. Thanksgiving all that would need to be changed would be light colors, take out purple and add yellow and brown, and the characters which would include pilgrims, native Americans and turkeys. Memorial Day, Flag Day and the Fourth of July would have red, white and blue swag with red white and blue lights. Easter would be boughs of spring flowers with pastel multicolored lights and the center would be bunnies, eggs, crosses and baby chicks.

By using them on multiple holidays, we would get more use for the investment. Plus, it would be unique in the area and create a nice backdrop for downtown events like the Piccadilly in White dinner and auction which would have white swag, with white lights, maybe even netting or icicle lights to create a lighted canopy effect. The ideas and uses would only be limited by the imagination of the event planners.
