As in previous years, former United States Marine and retired Jefferson City firefighter Darren Reuter once again placed flags at the graves of U.S. Veterans buried in Riverview Cemetery. For each flag placed, he then steps back and salutes. Reuter is a member of the Samuel F. Gearhart Detachment of the Marine Corps League which provided multiple volunteers to put out hundreds of the flags. They are placing them ahead of Memorial Day services at this and other cemeteries around town.
For the second consecutive year, Marine Corps League volunteers spread out across Riverview Cemetery to place U.S. flags alongside gravestones of veterans buried there.
League members placing flags at veterans' graves is a tradition in many parts of the country, according to Steve Trower, who served as a U.S. Marine and now is a member of the league.
The league would like to make its members placing the flags a tradition here in Jefferson City, too, Trower said.
"We place the flags at the graves of all the veterans -- not just the Marines," he said.
