Jefferson City man charged with drug trafficking, resisting arrest

A Jefferson City man faces drug and weapon charges after a police pursuit over the weekend.

Chaquan McClain, 20, was charged in Cole County with second-degree drug trafficking, resisting arrest and unlawful use of a weapon.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement said authorities located McClain chasing a man along Tanner Way on Sunday morning, and that the man called out to police saying McClain had a firearm.

When contacted by authorities, McClain reportedly told them he had broken a window along East Dunklin Street but backed away when the officer told him he was under arrest. McClain said he needed to give the backpack he was wearing to another individual on the scene and bolted, throwing the backpack toward the third party.

Another officer chased McClain down while the initial responding officer searched the bag, reportedly finding a Glock 9 mm handgun with an extended magazine and alterations allowing it to be fired automatically. The man who was fleeing from McClain said the loaded firearm had been pointed at him at some point.

A witness allegedly said McClain had entered the man's residence to harm him, and a further search of the backpack reportedly revealed nearly 30 fentanyl pills.
