Jefferson City man arrested on tampering charge

JAMESTOWN, Mo. -- A Jefferson City man is behind bars after allegedly attempting to steal a car less than a day after his release from the Moniteau County Jail.

According to a Moniteau County Sheriff's Office news release, Brandon L. Higgins, 19, of Jefferson City, was arrested Friday on suspicion of first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle in Jamestown. The release said the arrest came after reports were received of a male subject entering a parked vehicle on School Street.

Witnesses told deputies the subject entered a residence on Row Street. The deputies then visited the residence, where they made contact with Higgins. He told deputies during questioning he was attempting to steal a vehicle, but fled with the keys when confronted.

The sheriff's office also discovered Higgins had just been released on bond from the Moniteau County Jail the previous night; he had been in custody on domestic assault and property damage charges.

Following his arrest, Higgins was returned to jail and is being held with no bond.
