Council candidates file large donations, expenditures

Candidates for Jefferson City Council reported thousands of dollars in campaign donations in the latest round of campaign finance reports.

Candidates were required to file their latest reports eight days ahead of the election, which will be held Tuesday.

Ward 1 incumbent David Kemna has brought in $546 in total receipts this election, ending the reporting period with $2,058.78 on hand and $1,629.80 in total expenditures. He reported $250 in donations of $100 or less, according to the latest update.

Expenditures exceeding $100 included a $425 advertisement purchase from Jefferson City Magazine and yard signs from Midwest Advertising Spec. for $953.24.

His opponent, Jeff Ahlers, reported ending the eight-days-out period with $425 on hand. He brought in $6,160 in total receipts and spent $5,127.

Donations included: Jake Vogel, $200; Scott McCutchen, $50; Robert Clark, $100; Mike Sills, $100; Joe Scheppers, $100; Kris Scheperle, $300; LeAnn Korsmeyer, $100; Henry Herschel, $60; and Scott Faughn, $100.

His expenditures include: $172,56 to Colonial Printing for push cards; $100 to Chris Burns for a fundraiser; $100 to K9 on the Front Line for a fundraiser; $389.34 to Colonial Printing for push cards; $624.34 to The Capital Ad Sheet for campaign ads; $886.94 to Colonial Printing for a campaign mailer and push cards; $448.90 to VictoryStore.com; and $2,253 to the News Tribune for campaign ads.

Ward 2 contender Aaron Mealy reported $1,047.31 on hand at the end of the latest reporting period, having brought in $4,563.11 and spent $3,515.80.

Donations included $150 from Robyn Burnett and $200 from Central Bank. He brought in $920 in donations of $100 or less.

His expenditures included $3,237.04 to Brown Printing for various expenses.

His opponent, Edith Vogel, ended the reporting period with $1,320.83 on hand. She brought in $4,114.96 over the course of the election, $1,905.27 of which came from her and $1,020 of which was from donations at or below $100, and spent $274.17.

Her expenses included $6.71 in campaign supplies and two $133.73 payments to Colonial Printing for advertising expenses.

Ward 3 challenger Treaka Young reported $1,296.86 on hand, with $7,184.84 in receipts and $5,569.60 in expenditures.

In addition to $770 in self-funding, she received: $200 from Vicki Myers; $200 from Stephanie Clark; $100 from Ruthi Sturdevant; $300 from Ron Nelson; $250 from Mary Badbois; $100 from Patricia Stinson; $100 from Roger Freudenberg; $200 from Greg Schildmeyer; $250 from Patricia Jackson; $150 from Jackson Cooper; and $482.13 in donations of less than $100.

Expenditures included $95 for a campaign message from Campaign Verify and $776.42 to Ambitions Creations for t-shirts. To Brown Printing, she paid $4,298.18 for expenses including signs and flyers.

Her opponent, incumbent Scott Spencer, ended the period with $1,414.93 on hand, $3,255 in receipts and $1,560.07 in expenditures.

Donations included: $50 from Dorothy Berry; $100 from Bill Ambrose; $500 from the Cole County Republican Club; $100 from Jim Simmons; $100 Jim Wisch; and $100 from Darrell Gordon.

Expenditures included $470 to Capital Ad Sheet for a campaign ad and $1,053.66 to Firehouse Design Studio for push cards.

In Ward 5, Alicia Edwards brought in $2,924.45 this cycle and spent $1,768.28, leaving $1,156.17 on hand.

She received $321.60 from Jan Schumacher and $1,868 from donations of $100 or less; $321.60 came from credit payments.

Expenses included $29.87 for address labels, $450 to Colonial Printing for campaign signs, $473.70 to Ambitious Creations, $237.25 to FedEx for printing services, $135.70 to Sam's Club for food and $87 to the U.S. Postal Service for postage.

Her opponent, Mark Schwartz, brought in $28,525 this cycle, spending $17,692.06 and ending the period with $10,532.94 on hand.

A small portion of his contributions, $1,025, came from donations of $100 or less. Other contributions were: $3,000 from John Kampeter; $500 from Gary Wheeler; $300 from Pat Thomas; $250 from H PAC; $8,000 from Lincoln PAC; $3,000 from Mark Schell; $2,000 from Mike Kampeter; $200 from Nicole Clarkston; $250 from Charles Cierpiot; $500 from the Cole County Republican Club; $200 from Kevin Riley; $300 from Alexander Curchin IV; $200 from Trevor Monnig; $200 from Larry Kurnmen; $2,000 from Day Solutions Inc.; $2,000 from Shanon Hawk; $2,000 from Husch Blackwell Strategies; $100 from Scott Faughn; $500 from Stephen Bradford; and $2,000 from Sandra Schwartz.

His expenditures include $16,589.61 to Palm Strategic Group for strategic planning and social media strategic operations and retainer, printing, digital media management and campaign signs.
