Bates’ PAC leads in JC school board election fundraising; Hovis leads in spending

A political action committee supporting Brad Bates' campaign led the way in fundraising this election, while a candidate committee for Scott Hovis had the highest expenditures, according to campaign finance reports for Jefferson City School Board candidate committees filed with the Missouri Ethics Commission.

Five candidates are vying for three seats on the school board: incumbents Hovis and Bates, and challengers Mike Harvey, Tapiwa "Felix" Madondo and Suzanne Luther.

Madondo did not have an active committee on the Missouri Ethics Commission website, though the other four candidates did.

In campaign finance reports filed eight days prior to the election, candidate and political action committees disclosed their contributions and expenditures over the last couple of months. Committees are required to report donations of more than $100 from individuals and donations from committees regardless of the amount.

Suzanne Luther

Luther's candidate committee, with Rebecca Gordon serving as treasurer, reported $5,238 total received this election, with $2,640 received during the period from February 19 to March 23.

In total, Luther's committee spent $2,443.48 this election, all of it during that time period. The report showed $196.52 on hand, though the calculation did not appear to include $2,598 in receipts from the previous reporting period.

During the latest reporting period, the following people contributed $100 or more: $100 from Donovan Dean; $250 from Bob Antweiler; $300 from Rebecca Gordon; and $500 from Brenda Hatfield.

During the previous reporting period, the following people contributed $100 or more: John Madras, the Central to Good Government Political Action Committee, Greg Schildmeyer, Janet Gallaher and Doug Richardson. Doug Addison contributed $500.

Mike Harvey

Harvey's candidate committee, with Janet Clark serving as treasurer and David Clark serving as deputy treasurer, reported a total of $2,078.99 received this election, including $920 during the latest reporting period.

The committee spent $716.09 so far this election, leaving $1,362.90 on hand.

During the latest reporting period, the following people donated $100 or more to Harvey's committee: Edward Storey, Ronnie Fitzwater, Thomas Naught and Lynda Nichols, all for $100 each.
