Lincoln softball drops two games to Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Lincoln Blue Tigers dropped both games of their softball MIAA doubleheader Friday, losing 5-0 in Game 1 and 7-0 in Game 2 to the 21st-ranked Washburn Ichabods.

Ashton Stalling got the start in the circle in Game 1 for the Blue Tigers and was able to work the first two innings scoreless by stranding a pair of singles on base in the first and an error in the second.

The Ichabods got to Stalling in the bottom of the third, though, as Hadley Kerschen singled and Jaycee Ginter doubled her home as the next batter.

Jordan Galliher entered the game to pitch after and was able to get out of the inning without further damage.

Galliher allowed four runs, none earned, in the fourth inning after two errors proved costly.

Sheyenne Cheek and Ginter nearly combined for a no-hitter for Washburn in the circle, but Emily Williams broke up the bid with two outs and two strikes in the seventh inning with a single to left field.

The Ichabods jumped ahead early in Game 2 with four runs and never looked back.

Maddie Welker got the start in the circle for Lincoln and struck out the first batter she faced and induced a groundout to follow, but Washburn collected three hits, a walk and a two-RBI double by Danielle Schlader to follow to take control.

The Ichabods added a single run in the second, fourth and fifth innings to account for their other three runs.

Leslie Callahan led the way for the Blue Tigers in Game 2 by going 2-for-3, while Maris Ollison, Williams and Joss Marriott each added a hit.

Lincoln (4-16, 1-5 MIAA) will look to rebound when it starts its doubleheader at noon today at Emporia State (16-12, 0-4).

Washburn moves to 25-5 on the season and 4-2 in conference play.
