The blazer was once an essential part of the corporate culture attire and school uniforms, but today, this piece of outerwear has become a versatile closet staple. Like many other wardrobe basics, such as a well-fitted pair of jeans, a white tee or a little black dress, a blazer should be an investment piece: timeless, versatile and an item you love.

When it comes to picking out the perfect blazer, there are many style options to choose from, but don’t let that overwhelm you. Blazers are typically defined by their structured shape that are more casual than a suit jacket with navel buttons. For a standard fit, the garment’s hemline should reach the hips and the sleeves should touch the wrists. Consider sizing up or borrowing from the men’s section to get an oversized look with a more casual feel.

If you don’t already have this staple in your wardrobe, local consignment and thrift stores like K's Consignment Shop, The Snob Shop Exchange and Goodwill offer blazer options at an affordable price point. For a variety of styles, stores like Kohls, TJ Maxx and Dillard’s provide a range of sizes for all. Jenna Harms, a finance student at the University of Missouri, prefers to thrift her blazers and wear them to elevate a casual look. “I usually style a blazer button-up with a bralette underneath,” Harms said. She completes the look with a pair of trousers or jeans. Harms likes that blazers can be the finishing touch to make it classier.

Whether you’re looking to style a blazer for work or to wear during cocktail hour, HER has rounded up three ways to elevate the classic blazer.

1. A coordinating set

The classic suit with a matching blazer and pants is a timeless pairing. You can’t go wrong with a black suit or any other basic colors such as navy or tan, but to dress down the formal attire, style with a mini skirt, boots and a graphic tee for an everyday look. When dressing for a more formal setting, stand out with a patterned coordinating set, such as a plaid skirt or choose a unique colored pantsuit, such as pink.

2. Dress down with jeans

Jeans and a blazer give off an effortless, cool girl look that is perfect for grabbing coffee or wearing to the office. Pair a basic-colored blazer with a straight-legged pair of jeans and a white or black tee. Finish off with a pair of sneakers and accessorize with some jewelry.

3. Add a statement piece

The classic structure of a blazer always pairs well with basic pieces such as a button-up or trousers but choosing a statement piece can add an individual touch to your outfit. A statement piece is any item that draws the eye’s attention, such as a ruffled top, a printed pair of pants or a bright pair of boots. The blazer itself can also be a statement piece by choosing a piece with a unique fabric, like velvet or sequins, or by choosing a piece with a fun applique. Pair your bold piece with simple basics to draw attention to the statement piece.
