Porite to cease Jefferson City operations at end of 2023

Porite Jefferson Corporation's website claims its Jefferson City plant "produces bushings, bearings, gears, spacers and structural components for the automotive, industrial, agricultural, and consumer products industry," some of which are seen in the above website screenshot.

Porite Jefferson Corporation, a local manufacturer, is shutting down its operations at the end of the year subject to customer agreements.

The business, located at 1535 Fairgrounds Road in Jefferson City, employs 65 full- and part-time operators, administrative staff and mechanical and process engineers. They will be able to maintain their positions through the end of the year, according to a news release.

Porite Group CEO Masashi Kikuchi said the decision was made by Porite's headquarters in Japan and was not based on bankruptcy.

"This is not an easy decision, but the decision was made to ensure strength throughout the entire Porite Group," Kikuchi said in a statement. "This is not bankruptcy of Porite Jefferson Corporation, Porite headquarters in Japan is leading this closure."

Customers working with Porite will still be able to have their parts manufactured through other businesses within the Porite Group. The corporation has 10 other manufacturing plants in Asia, according to its website, but plans to maintain a U.S. warehouse.

The site, which opened in 2002, produces bearings, bushings, spacers, gears and structural components for the automotive, agricultural, industrial and consumer products industries. Its website says the manufacturer features lathes and a mill, and performs secondary machining of its parts.

This story was updated at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday to correct the date the site opened.
