YOUR OPINION: Access to Capitol restrooms

Fred Forck, Taos

Dear Editor,

Women in our state Capitol need to be warned that biological males may be allowed to use the restrooms of biological females.

When I was told of an incident in which a biological male followed a biological female into a women's restroom at the Capitol, I sent the following question to the office of my state representative, Rudy Veit: Could your office investigate whether biological males are allowed to use women's restrooms in the state Capitol building?

The response from Veit's office was: "We don't have anyone guarding the restrooms; we do have a family restroom on the basement floor by hearing room 1 that locks."

When I pressed the office to actually answer my original question (which did not ask whether restrooms are guarded or whether alternative restrooms were available), the following answer came back: "There is no direct law or regulation governing this area of concern. Technically, the Office of Administration maintains the restrooms and most other common areas within this building."

Later, I was informed by a Capitol staffer that there have been other incidents of biological males using women's restroom in our state Capitol.

So assuming this is true, I appeal to Gov. Parson, Senate President Pro Tem Rowden and House Speaker Plocher to investigate and do whatever it takes to assure the privacy of biological females using state and Capitol women's restrooms. The logical conclusion of decent people would be to disallow the practice by whatever means that takes. Ordinary citizens should not be required to participate in the fantasies of biological males with gender dysphoria, a mental disorder. Biological males with gender dysphoria could be informed where the restroom that locks is located. If state leaders avoid addressing this issue directly, warning signs need to be posted at the entrance to women's restrooms warning biological females that biological males are allowed to invade their privacy.

On a related point, males have been charged with felony and misdemeanor sexual misconduct for indecent exposure and peeping tom practices. This indicates a law covering this may exist.
