Emily Henry Helps Readers Find Their Happy Place

by Sophia Donis | July 12, 2023 at 4:00 a.m.

Emily Henry’s new book, “Happy Place,” is the perfect summer read. The book follows Harriet and Wyn, a couple who have recently broken off their engagement. Despite this heartbreaking decision, neither of them have told their shared friend group. Their choices post-breakup suddenly catch up with them when they’re forced to pretend to still be together while on vacation with their friends. As one can imagine, this task isn’t as easy as the two thought it would be. The audience is left constantly guessing if Harriet and Wyn still have feelings for each other, which makes the story an engaging read.

The novel bounces back and forth between “real life” and “happy place,” detailing the group’s vacation in Knotts Harbor, Maine, and past events that transpired between Harriet and Wyn.

Henry has often been praised for her character depth in previous books, and “Happy Place” is no exception. The little moments shared between characters make the book relatable and hard to put down. The audience has no choice but to root for the characters and want them to succeed in their journeys of personal growth.

Harriet and Wyn’s relationship reminds us that, sometimes, we forget the needs of a partner when we are trying to do what we believe is best for them. The emotional conversations that transpire between the two tug at the heartstrings and make the audience feel as deeply as the characters do. Their shared struggles to find themselves and pick up the pieces after loss are truly inspiring and leave readers with a lot to reflect on after finishing the book.

A new theme woven throughout Henry’s latest masterpiece is the shifting dynamics of friendship as time goes on. For some, it’s a sobering reality, and it is hard to come to terms with. Others are in denial and believe everything is fine until it isn’t. This was one of the many layers unpacked throughout the book, and it’s hard to ignore the emotions evoked through Henry’s writing.

“Happy Place” is the perfect conglomeration of friendship, love, grief and self-discovery. It features a strong female character trying to find herself amidst the chaos and is chock-full of lovable characters. Whether you’re looking to see how Henry’s fourth novel compares to her other New York Times best sellers or you’re in need of a great poolside read, “Happy Place” is definitely one to check out.
