Standoff in Holts Summit results in arrest

A standoff with multiple law enforcement agencies resulted in one person being taken into custody Sunday.

The incident began early Sunday morning in the 200 block of Spalding Rd. in Holts Summit, according to a release from the Callaway County Sheriff's Office.

Officers with the Holts Summit Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance with a firearm. The officers determined shots had been fired in the area, and helped one person evacuate the house where the disturbance took place. This person was transferred to a safe location.

The Holts Summit officers were unsuccessful in attempts to talk to the armed suspect and requested assistance from the Callaway County Sheriff's Office. The CCSO Special Responce Team was sent to the scene in Holts Summit.

CCSO SRT members were able to talk to the armed suspect, but the suspect refused to leave the house.

The standoff lasted several hours, according to a release.

The Fulton Police Department Special Response Unit and the Cole County Sheriff's Department SWAT Team additionally responded to the situation.

The incident began at around 5:30 a.m., and the suspect exited the house at around 12:45 p.m.

The suspect was taken into custody by CCSO SRT members without incident. Various less lethal resources were used in attempts to get the suspect to leave the house, according to a release.

Callaway County EMS treated the suspect for self-inflicted injuries. The suspect was then taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

Maurice Burkhead, 60, of Holts Summit was identified by the CCSO as the suspect in an updated release on Monday.

He is charged with felony offenses of unlawful use of a weapon (two counts), kidnapping (2nd degree), domestic assault (3rd degree), unlawful possession of a firearm, property damage and resisting arrest.

Burkhead is also charged with misdemeanors of domestic assault (4th degree) and kidnapping (3rd degree), according to a release.

Burkhead remains at the Callaway County Jail without bond, pending later bond setting assessment or review.
