Incumbent candidate for Jefferson City School District board Scott Hovis said his top priorities are investing in staff, students and infrastructure; setting high expectations; and creating a strong and attractive school culture.

Hovis is the executive director of the Missouri Golf Association, seven-year chairman of the Missouri Tourism Commission, and an executive officer on the United States Golf Association Golf Council.

Hovis said recruitment and retention is a part of investing in staff, and it's also important to supply students and classrooms with the items they need to be successful.

Hovis said he wants to set high expectations for the district. As a board, Hovis said, the job is to provide a sounding board for the superintendent and staff "on the ground."

"We've got a lot of things that we offer as a school district that other school districts around us do not, from the amount of AP classes that we offer to the Nichols Career Center," Hovis said, adding that he would be dedicated to getting that message out.

Hovis has been on the board for almost six years and said the board has "made great strides" in that time. He said he's qualified to continue serving because he's passionate about seeing the district that he and his children have attended succeed.

Hovis and his wife of 22 years, Mindy, have a daughter at Kansas State University and a son at Lewis and Clark Middle School. Hovis graduated from JCHS in 1992 and is the son of two former teachers in the district.
