Six medalists, two top finishers and a second-place total as a team.

The Jefferson City Lady Jays had a lot of success Friday at the Capital City Girls Invitational at Capital City High School.

“The girls performed wonderfully, they did a great job,” Jefferson City coach Candace Cameron said.

Izzy Eitel was the first Lady Jay to stand atop the podium, taking first at 110 pounds with a 3-0 record.

Eitel pinned Camdenton’s Selah Segebarth in 2:42 in the second round then needed only 34 seconds to pin Mexico’s Layla Fierge.

“This is her senior year and I’m proud of her,” Cameron said. “She did a really good job.”

Lexi Dunwiddie also took the top spot for the Lady Jays, finishing 5-0 at 130 pounds with all five wins coming by fall.

“Lexi has been doing this for a while,” Cameron said. “She’s just fun to watch, she’s an amazing wrestler.”

Kyla Finney took second for the Lady Jays with a 2-1 record at 190 pounds, with both wins coming by fall. Finney pinned Owensville’s Kelby Schoenfeld and Madi Lewis before dropping a match to tourney champion Lily Burns of Tipton.

“This is only her second year wrestling,” Cameron said. “She did an amazing job.”

Kaylee Redcay (140) and Deja’Nette Wallace (170) both claimed third for Jefferson City.

Redcay compiled a 3-1 record with one win by fall, one by major decision and one by a decision.

Redcay pinned St. James’ Elisa Bierman in 31 seconds to start her day, then beat Camdenton’s Ursula Sandford by a 12-0 major decision before losing by fall to Hillsboro’s Katie Hendrix. Redcay rebounded with a 5-2 decision against Moberly’s Addison Orscheln.

Wallace put together a 2-2 record with both wins coming by fall.

Wallace pinned Owensville’s Eliana Thompson in 56 seconds and Tipton’s Ashlynn McCoy in 2:41.

“Deja’Nette got her win at the end that she needed,” Cameron said.

Sarah Horne also took third for the Lady Jays with an 0-2 record at 105 pounds.

Ava Purvis put together a 2-3 record at 145 pounds with both wins coming by fall.

Jefferson City scored 46.5 points as a team to take second.

“It gets your momentum up, it gets the girls’ spirits up,” Cameron said of the event as a whole. “It lets them know where they are because some of these girls they’re going to see again.”

Capital City had three wrestlers reach the podium to compile a team score of 21.5 points to take seventh.

“I think they did excellent,” Capital City coach Jenna Germer said. “All of our girls wrestling today were freshmen. Two second places and a third place, I’m pretty proud of how they performed overall. There were a couple of pretty tough matches, but they pushed through.”

Maci Albright was the Lady Cavaliers’ top finisher with a record of 4-1 with three wins by fall to take second at 125 pounds.

Albright pinned Hillsboro’s Lilly Kay in 5:45, then needed only 56 seconds to earn a slap of the mat against Mexico’s Emileigh Woods. Albright continued her hot streak with a pin of Rock Bridge’s Annie DeTar in 2:21 before falling to Mexico’s Abby Bowen.

“Maci had quite a few matches, she had our most of the night,” Germer said. “She really got after it, she had three pins back to back to back. That was awesome. It was cool to see her get out there, be aggressive and get after it.”

Madeleine Jones (105) also took second for the Lady Cavaliers with a 1-1 record.

Skylar Jones claimed third for Capital City with a 1-2 record, with the win coming by a 4-3 decision against Hillsboro’s Rebekah Liew-Nguyen.

“It’s a lot of learning opportunities,” Germer said. “We have girls who after a match will come debrief a little bit and then practice some new things. It’s really cool to see them then roll into their next match and try those things they were working on, just so quickly on that turnaround, it has the application piece. You can practice and practice, but doing it out there is different.”

Fatima combined for a team score of 16 points to place ninth with Skyla Schroeder leading the way.

Schroeder had a 3-0 record with two wins by fall and another by outlasting her opponent in multiple overtimes for a decision to win the 135-pound title.

Schroeder pinned Camdenton’s Lucinda Baker in 3:57 and Hillsboro’s Ella Bingman in 3:16.

Schroeder and Tipton’s Holly Parker then squared off for the championship, with neither scoring in the opening period. Parker scored the first point of the match with an escape from the down starting position in the second period, then Schroeder did the same in the third to tie the match at one after regulation.

Neither grappler scored a point in the 30-second sudden victory overtime, and neither scored in the minute-long extra period after starting neutral. The stalemate continued in the ensuing two 30-second overtimes, ending with Schroeder in the top starting position and maintaining control of Parker through the final 30 seconds, earning the 2-1 decision on ultimate tiebreaker.

Heidi Struemph went 2-1 for the Lady Comets with a win by fall against Mexico’s Layla Fierge in 38 seconds and a win by 9-5 decision over Camdenton’s Selah Segebarth.

Jefferson City will return to the mat Wednesday at Battle. Capital City will compete Tuesday when it hosts Sedalia Smith-Cotton. Fatima will be back in action next Friday at the Cole Camp Tournament.
