Progress continues at the Jefferson City Schools athletic facilities, and if weather holds up, students should be able to use facilities in March, school officials said.

At Jefferson City High School, an irrigation system is about to be installed in the outfield of the baseball/softball field, with sod and turf to follow. Almost all handrails are up and exterior fencing is beginning. Pitching mounds and bullpens have been installed.

At Capital City High School, the press boxes at the grandstands are almost finished, and crews are finishing up the locker rooms and other items on the first floor.

The stands will be usable in March, Chief of Operations Dawn Berhorst said at Thursday's board meeting, but in order to install bleachers, there must be consistent 45 degree weather overnight to lay surface coating before benches are installed.

"So they might have to bring a chair for a while if the weather's cold in March, but it'll at least be usable as a grandstand, just maybe ... without the bleachers immediately until we get to that temperature point," she said.

Sircal is the general contractor on the job, which has been underway for well over a year. In addition to the sidewalk pour, Meyer Electric was on site to run electric to the baseball/softball scoreboard and to the stadium lights.
