Applications are now open for the vacant Fourth Ward seat on the Jefferson City Council.

New Mayor Ron Fitzwater's election to the office left his seat up for grabs, and the city charter allows the council to fill a vacancy with a majority vote. Whoever wins the appointment will fill it until the next municipal election, when someone will be elected to serve the rest of the term.

Those seeking office are required to be 21 years old at the time of the election or appointment, a U.S. citizen, a qualified city voter who has lived here for at least a year, have lived in the ward for at least six months and have no outstanding city debts. They also cannot have been removed from a seat on the council or been found guilty of misappropriating funds while in office.

Applicants must submit a cover letter, resume and three notarized candidate endorsements. They must also provide two forms of identification, such as a driver's license or Social Security card, that includes their name and address. All information must be submitted to the city clerk by 5 p.m. May 1, and all applicants will appear before the council at that evening's meeting.

The council expects a decision and appointment at the May 15 meeting, according to a news release.

Those with questions can call the city clerk's office at (573) 634-6311.
