Callaway County passes marijuana sales tax

12% of Callawegians turn out at polls

Callaway County voters went to the polls Tuesday, electing school board members and city officials.

There was a 12 percent turnout of the county’s 27,503 registered voters.

A 3 percent tax on the sale of recreational marijuana in Callaway County passed with 72.31 percent of the vote. The percentage of passage was similar across three of the county’s cities: Holts Summit, 76.36 percent; Fulton, 72.39 percent; and Kingdom City, 66.7 percent.

Fulton elected Steve Myers as mayor with 34.29 percent of the vote. He ran against Mike West, who received 29.59 percent, John Braun with 21.94 percent and Steve Moore with 14.18 percent.

Auxvasse elected Ronald Dye as mayor with 66.67 percent of the vote. He ran against Terry Walker who received 33.33 percent. Dye will replace Ashley Steinbeck; she did not file for re-election.

Mokane re-elected Chad Booher as mayor with 100 percent of the vote; he was unopposed.

Cities in the county also elected members to city government.

Mokane elected two alderman for two-year terms. Jo Belmont received 48.28 percent of the vote. Tara Kirk received 51.72 percent of the vote.

There was one open position for a one-year term as alderman; no one filed for the seat.

Holts Summit elected Ward 1 and Ward 2 aldermen to two-year terms. Both were unopposed; Mark Edwards was elected to Ward 1, and Thomas Wulff was elected to Ward 2.

In Fulton, only one of the four ward seats were contested.

In Ward 1, William “Bill” Hinchie received 57.19 percent of the vote; Sharlene McArtor received 42.81 percent.

In unopposed races, three incumbents were re-elected. They were Ward 2 Alderman Jeffrey Stone, Ward 3 Alderman Alan Combs and Ward 4 Alderwoman Lauren Nelson.

In Auxvasse, Clifford Wenneker Jr. was elected South Ward alderman with 61.76 percent of the vote; Bret Barnes received 38.24 percent of the vote.

A North Ward alderman seat was unfilled; no one had run for the post.

New Bloomfield elected Ward 1 and Ward 2 aldermen to two-year terms. Daniel Kliethermes was elected Ward 1 alderman; Curtis Clem was elected to Ward 2.

Kingdom City elected two to two-year terms on the Board of Trustees. Allen Flood-Thompson received 41.67 percent of the vote; Denise Shaw received 58.33 percent of the vote.

The North Callaway R-1 School District elected three to three-year terms on the school board. Jason Salmons received 23.60 percent, Tim Safranski received 21.62 percent and Danielle Atterberry received 20.69 percent. Trailing in the contest was Amy Montcalm-Craghead with 20.41 percent and Hadley Linnenbringer with 13.69 percent.

The New Bloomfield R-3 School District three to three-year terms on the school board. Three who won the race were: Josh Woods with 26.28 percent, Angie Sullivan with 24.37 percent and Robert Martin with 22.96 percent. They ran against Gina Clark, with 20.75 percent, and Ciara Wright, with 5.64 percent of the vote.

The South Callaway R-2 school district elected three three-year terms. Justin Lauf received 22.09 percent, Penny Felkner with 21.83 percent and Aaron Dickinson with 21.56 percent. They ran against Wendy Akers (21.43 percent) and Delbert Finney (13.10).

The Fulton School District No. 58 School District elected three to three-year terms. They were Joe Davis with 33.49 percent, Connie Epperson with 36.11 percent and Steven Medrow with 30.40 percent of the vote.
