Lady Jays tennis blanks Smith-Cotton in district opener

The Jefferson City Lady Jays began the Class 2 District 5 Tournament on Monday with a 5-0 dual win against the Sedalia Smith-Cotton Tigers at Capital City High School.

Smith-Cotton forfeited at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, as well as No. 3 doubles, allowing Jefferson City to begin the dual with a 3-0 lead.

In singles, Emmarie Graham won her match 6-0, 6-0, while Rachael Smith clinched the dual win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in her match.

Anagha Garikapty and Cora Wood were still playing their Nos. 1 and 2 singles match when the dual win was clinched for the Lady Jays.

Jefferson City (8-6), the No. 3 seed, advances to play at 4 p.m. today at second-seeded Lebanon in the district semifinals.

Top-seeded Capital City will host fifth-seeded Camdenton at 4 p.m. today at Capital City High School in the other semifinal dual.
