Blair Oaks High School is asking community members to chip in to send cookies to crew members of the USS Michael Murphy on Thursday.
The ship is named for Michael Murphy, a Medal of Honor recipient who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2005. The ship was christened May 7, 2011, Murphy's birthday, by his mother, Maureen Murphy.
The USS Murphy is a destroyer based in Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii. The ship holds 267 sailors who "love their sweets," according to an announcement for the cookie drive.
Those wishing to donate cookies should gather up friends and family to bake cookies, which should be placed in tin cans or reclosable bags and brought to the Blair Oaks High School office Thursday.
You can also call the office and a student can come and grab them from you. People are also asked to donate money to help cover the shipping cost by writing a check to Blair Oaks High School.
