Jefferson City's Bethune, Galbreath advance to state track in four events

WAYNESVILLE -- Jefferson City’s David Bethune and Cheria Galbreath each advanced to state in four events Monday during the Class 4 Sectional 3 meet at Waynesville High School.

In individual events, Bethune placed third in the boys 200-meter dash and fourth in the 100-meter dash, while Galbreath took fourth in both the girls 100- and 300-meter hurdles.

In relay events, Galbreath, Seleena Morris, Elicia Theroff and Riley Schonhardt won the 4x400-meter relay in 4:04.58. Galbreath’s fourth event, the 4x200-meter relay, came in third place. Theroff, Morris and Emerald Okpodighe also ran on Jefferson City’s 4x200.

Bethune helped the Jays’ 4x100- and 4x200-meter relays to third-place finishes at sectionals. Josh Wilson, Rodney Wilson and Jacob Wilson were the remaining runners on the 4x200 and Collin Ice, Rodney Wilson and Jacob Wilson rounded out the 4x100.

Parker Gourley and Tommy Roehl each qualified for state in two events. Roehl won the boys 3,200-meter run in 9:43.24 and added a third-place finish in the 1,600-meter run, while Gourley tied for third in the high jump and placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles.

For the Lady Jays, Morris and Theroff qualified for state in three events. Both ran on the 4x100-meter relay, which took fourth place, and Morris was runner-up in the 400-meter dash. Lyric Hearn and Taplin ran the other two legs of the 4x100.

In the girls field events, Graham came in second place in the triple jump and Stevenette Samuels placed second in the discus to round out Jefferson City’s state qualifiers.

In the second team standings, the Jefferson City boys finished fifth out of 18 schools with 55.5 points and the girls placed seventh with 57 points. Willard was first in the boys standings with 115 points and West Plains was atop the girls standings with 113 points.

The top-four finishers from the sectional meet advance to the Class 4 track and field state championships, which are Friday and Saturday at Adkins Stadium.
