Your Opinion: A time to change

Dear Editor:

Should we forgive everyone, regardless of their crimes, and no longer punish those with the actions of a criminal? Should we deviate from our Christian beliefs and consider Old Testament theory? An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, etc.?

Totally against what we were once taught, our society is reaching a point of no return. Are we eliminating the belief that we have rules to live by, and moving to the extreme that one can "do their own thing" without consequence? Too many kill, lie and steal, believing that they are above the law of God. Our legal system seems to be on the wrong side of the law and it is time to reign in those policies!

Rest assured someone will soon appear in the news saying that the recent 18-year-old murderer is having his "rights" violated. Some attorney will take the case by choice or force. Who would even try to defend this person? Has our legal system become another tool in the "toolbox" to eliminate what once was the finest country in the world? Many television shows suggest that violence is a natural phenomenon. Most are not decent forms of entertainment! The producers of these must live in a world of hate and distrust! They certainly have no children or if they do, they are gambling on their children's mental future.

We can't torture the perpetrator and expose the horrific scene using the media. We can change our legal system. Perhaps we have too many (elite) people sitting on the high courts of our land who are completely out of touch with reality. Do they not care as long as they are not affected? Where do they live?

We -- as a country of people taught to believe a person has the right to choose their religion, their profession and their friends -- are being led on a path to destruction. We must make some changes!

When one has no conscience, he/she has lost their decency! A nation without God is nation on the road to Gomorrah.
