College Baseball: Hirschvogel, Shikles homer in Westminster's finale

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- Westminster senior third baseman Hayden Hirschvogel and senior catcher Derek Shikles both homered Tuesday in the Blue Jays’ 16-14 loss to Greenville in the first round of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

Hirschvogel (Jefferson City High School) opened the scoring for Westminster with a three-run home run to left field in the second inning. It was his fourth homer of the season.

Shikles (New Bloomfield High School) added a two-run home run in the sixth inning, his sixth homer of the season.

Westminster led 10-0 after the top of the third inning, but Greenville scored the game’s next 16 runs, including 10 in the bottom of the third.

Sophomore right fielder Coltin Green (St. Elizabeth High School) went 1-for-4 with two RBI, hitting an RBI single in the third inning and a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning for the Blue Jays’ final run.

Sophomore pitcher Trent Morrow (Russellville High School) threw the final 3⅓ innings for Westminster, striking out four while not allowing a run or a hit.

Shikles finished the season with a .381 batting average (43-for-113) with 34 runs scored and 32 RBI.

Hirschvogel hit .303 (33-for-109) with 28 RBI and 17 runs scored, while Green batted .223 (25-for-112) with 16 RBI and 15 runs scored.

Morrow pitched in 11 games this season, and Tuesday was his only relief appearance. He had a 2-5 record with a 5.76 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 59⅓ innings pitched.

Westminster ended the season with an 11-23 record.
