Gov’t Mule, Bela Fleck concerts coming to Riverside Park in June

A rock titan and a bluegrass tour have been added to the selection of performances coming this season to the amphitheater stage.

VenuWorks' two most recent concert announcements in June include Gov't Mule and the Bela Fleck's Bluegrass Happenings tour at the Capital Region MU Health Care Amphitheater in Ellis-Porter Riverside Park.

First up, Gov't Mule takes over the Capital City at 7:30 p.m. June 7.

Led by Grammy Award-winning artist and guitar player Warren Haynes, Gov't Mule also features Matt Abts on drums, Danny Louis on keyboard, vocals and guitar, and Jorgen Carlsson on bass. The group has a global fan base, according to a VenuWorks news release, thanks to its daring rock musical style, becoming a human encyclopedia of American music.

Also an acclaimed solo artist, Haynes' prolific career includes spots with the Allman Brothers Band and the Dead, recording 20-plus studio and live albums, and banking thousands of performances and millions of album sales.

Later in the month, the Bluegrass Happenings tour -- featuring Bela Fleck, Sam Bush and The Jerry Douglas Band -- comes to the Riverside Park stage at 7 p.m. June 21.

American banjo player Bela Fleck will be performing from his latest album "My Bluegrass Heart," which is the third chapter in a bluegrass trilogy he began in 1988, according to a VenuWorks news release announcing the local concert. While bluegrass music is his roots, Fleck has earned 15 Grammy Awards in nine different genres including country, pop, jazz, classical and world music.

Fleck's band -- fiddler Michael Cleveland, mandolinist Sierra Hull, multi-instrumentalist Justin Moses, bassist Mark Schatz and guitar player Bryan Sutton -- will spotlight a multi-generational gamut of bluegrass artists.

This is Fleck's first bluegrass tour in 24 years. He'll be joined in the Capital City by mandolin player Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas, who plays the dobro and lap steel guitar.

Tickets for Gov't Mule and the Bluegrass Happenings tour go on sale Friday at www.ticketmaster.com. Prices range from $40-$80.
