The former pastor of First Christian Church on East Capitol Avenue has a book that's coming out at the end of the month about progressive Christian parenting.
The Rev. Beau Underwood has co-authored "Dear Son" along with Jonathan Hall. The two wrote a series of letters to their sons on a range of topics expressing their hopes for the men they hope their sons will one day become.
In the book, Underwood and Hall explore what it means to be a faith-filled dad to a son. The authors said they believe they offer a candid examination of fatherhood's joys and difficulties in their book, and they offer alternative perspectives on what faithful fatherhood looks like in today's world.
Underwood and Hall said instead of reinforcing "sexist social dynamics and machismo attitudes," they articulate and defend an understanding of masculinity that "presents a father as a servant of God, a man of emotion, and someone striving to raise sons committed to confronting the injustices of the world rather than perpetuating them."
The authors see "Dear Son" as a call to action for other fathers to deeply reflect -- especially in light of their Christian faith -- on what it means to have someone look at them and say "Dad" and to be able to respond with their whole heart.
"Dear Son" was made possible in part by a donation from First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, where Hall serves as its senior pastor.
A book signing has been scheduled 4:30-6:30 p.m. March 31 at Downtown Book and Toy on East High Street.
