Mustangs rally past Renegades in ninth, win 6-5

ST. JOSEPH -- It was a rough ninth inning Tuesday night for the Jefferson City Renegades.

The St. Joseph Mustangs rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the ninth, overcoming a five-run deficit to win 6-5 in MINK League play at Phil Welch Stadium.

The Renegades took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a Jackson Lovich double to right field that scored Luc Fuller.

Jefferson City scored its remaining four runs in the fourth inning.

Colby Ott’s RBI single to left field scored Lovich, giving the Renegades a 2-0 advantage. Later in the inning, Wilmsmeyer hit a bases-clearing double that scored Joe Hoerchler, Levi Masloski and Ott.

Braden Maltbie opened with six scoreless innings on the mound for Jefferson City, then pitched to two batters in the seventh before exiting the game. In six-plus innings, he allowed one run on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Tyler Petrosino’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh got St. Joseph on the scoreboard, then Michael Paule scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to make it a 5-2 game.

In the bottom of the ninth, Dylan Carey hit a sacrifice fly for the Mustangs, then Ryan Koski tied the game with a two-run single. Petrosino followed with an RBI single to center field, scoring Jaxon Himel for the winning run.

Mason Holton also got the no-decision for St. Joseph (15-8). In seven innings, he gave up five runs on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks.

Ott had the only multihit game for the Renegades, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Wilmsmeyer led the team with three RBI.

Jefferson City (9-10) returns home for a seven-inning doubleheader today against the Carroll Merchants (10-12) at Vivion Field. The first game starts at 5 p.m., with the second game to follow approximately at 7:30 p.m.
