Post 5 Seniors win Sedalia Wood Bat Tournament title

SEDALIA -- The Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Seniors won both games Sunday to take first place in the Sedalia Post 642 Wood Bat Tournament at Liberty Park.

The Post 5 Seniors won 8-1 against the Springfield A’s and 4-2 against Oak Grove Post 379, finishing the two-day tournament with a 4-0 record.

Billy Underwood and Holden Brand combined to pitch a two-hitter against the A’s. Underwood had four strikeouts and five walks in 4⅓ innings to earn the win, while Brand struck out three and retired all eight batters he faced in the final 2⅔ innings.

Jefferson City scored three runs in the top of the first inning on a wild pitch, an error and a sacrifice fly by Jaden Kolb.

The Post 5 Seniors scored five runs in the final two innings. Trevor Jordan hit an RBI single and later scored on an error in the sixth inning, while Jacob Schulte had an RBI groundout and Jack Robertson had a two-run single in the seventh.

Robertson went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles.

In the final game, both Jefferson City and Oak Grove entered with 3-0 records, setting up the de facto championship game.

The Post 5 Seniors led 4-0 at the end of two innings.

Kolb had an RBI double and Calen Kruger scored on a fielder’s choice in the top of the first inning. Luke Cavender hit a sacrifice fly and Blake Gentges hit an RBI groundout in the second to build the four-run advantage.

Oak Grove scored its runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Post 379 put the tying run on base in the seventh, but the Post 5 Seniors turned a double play to end the game.

Chase Schnieders was the winning pitcher for Jefferson City. In five innings, he allowed one run on one hit with four strikeouts and two walks.

Gentges pitched the final two innings, giving up one run on one hit and one walk.

The Post 5 Seniors (14-1) finished the game with four hits. Schulte added a double and Kruger and Robertson each had a single.
