Post 5 Freshman split another DH, Mid-Mo Express win tourney

For the second straight day, the Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Freshmen split a doubleheader in a home tournament Sunday at Babe Ruth Field at Apache Flats.

The Post 5 Freshmen opened with a 9-7 victory against the Gladstone Herrick Memorial Post 626 Owls before dropping an 8-0 decision to the Mid-Mo Express.

A five-run second inning proved to be just enough for Jefferson City in the win against Gladstone.

Grant Hollis and Brock Buhr each had RBI singles in the second, while Colten Scheulen hit a two-run double.

Scheulen went 2-for-3 with four RBI. He also had a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning.

Buhr went 3-for-4, adding two more singles. Jaden Rackers finished with two singles.

Carson Rustemeyer was the winning pitcher for the Post 5 Freshmen, striking out five and walking two batters in four innings. Brady Kemna pitched the final two innings, striking out two and walking five.

In Game 2 against the Express, Jefferson City had seven hits but couldn’t push a run across the plate in five innings.

Rackers had two hits, both singles for the Post 5 Freshmen (13-3). Evan McCullough pitched the first three innings, striking out two, while Buhr pitched the fourth, striking out one.

The Express put the game out of reach with five runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Ethan Burt, Ethan Milius and Nolan Laughlin each had two hits for the Express.

Laughlin and Justin Case each pitched two innings with one strikeout. Gabe DeFily added two strikeouts in relief in the fifth inning to close the shutout.

The Express (10-3) finished 4-0 in the tournament, starting their Sunday with a 13-0 win in three innings against Gladstone.

Gavin Williams was the winning pitcher, striking out four batters in two innings. Hayden Lackman pitched the third, striking out two.

The Express collected 12 hits in three innings, starting the game by scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning.

Williams went 3-for-3 with two singles, one double and three RBI to lead the offense. Bryson Holtmeyer had two hits and two RBI and DeFily finished with two hits.
