Post 5 Seniors start 2-0 in Sedalia Wood Bat Tournament

SEDLIA -- The Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Seniors extended their winning streak to eight games Saturday, opening the Sedalia Wood Bat Tournament with a 13-10 victory Post 499 Fike and a 4-3 win against the Sedalia Travelers Post 642 at Liberty Park.

In the opener against Fike, the Post 5 Seniors rallied from a four-run deficit by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Nate Roark highlighted the sixth for Jefferson City with a grand slam to right field, scoring Jaden Kolb, Jacob Schulte and Jace Kesel to give the Post 5 Seniors their first lead of the game.

Earlier in the inning, Calen Kruger hit a two-run double for Jefferson City, then Kolb followed with an RBI single to make the score 10-9.

Kolb went 4-for-4 with two more singles and a triple, totaling four RBI. Kruger had a pair of doubles to go with two RBI and Schulte also drove in two runs for the Post 5 Seniors.

Max Buscher pitched the first 4⅔ innings for Jefferson City, striking out four and walking one. Hunter Berendzen was credited with the win, pitching the next 1⅓ innings in relief, while Chase Schnieders struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh inning.

In Game 2 against Sedalia, both teams scored three runs in the first inning, then Jefferson City scored the deciding run in the top of the seventh.

Kruger hit a leadoff single in the seventh and scored on Schulte's sacrifice fly to give the Post 5 Seniors a one-run lead.

Kruger also gave Jefferson City the lead in the first inning with an RBI double to center field, scoring Blake Gentges. Jack Robertson added a two-run triple later in the inning to make it a 3-0 game.

Kruger went 3-for-4, adding a pair of singles, while Robertson was 2-for-3.

Kolb pitched the first four innings for Jefferson City, striking out four and walking one. Trevor Jordan was credited with the win, striking out two and walking one in three scoreless innings of relief. The two pitchers combined to retire 15 batters in a row between the first and sixth innings.

The Post 5 Seniors (12-1) continue round-robin play today in Sedalia with games against North Little Rock (Ark.) Post 74 at 11:30 a.m. and against Oak Grove Post 379 at 4:30 p.m.
