Art buffs, hobbyists and everything in between -- listen up! Kick off your Independence Day weekend early with JCMO's "Art Around Town" event June 30, and ooh and ah at some colors in addition to those bright and blinding fireworks.

"Art Around Town," hosted by the Jefferson City Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department, is a free evening of artwork on display from 4-8 p.m. at different locations around Jefferson City. The event is essentially an "art crawl," with each participating location displaying something unique to it.

Capital Arts Gallery, 1203 Missouri Blvd., will showcase the "Dreams: From Symbolism to Surrealism and Beyond" exhibition; Gumbo Bottoms, 221 Madison St., will have pieces from artists of Four Quarters Art House and Capital Arts; The Art Bazaar, 1502 E. High St., has a selection of fiber, wood, basketry, jewelry, clay, fused glass, stained glass, photography, paintings and more, with live demonstrations throughout the evening.

And, to quench your thirst, Last Flight Brewing Company, 738 Heisinger Road, will have chilled, hand-crafted beers to go with the stroll throughout their building, where many local artists' works decorate the walls.

New this year, JC Parks will have punch cards to get stamped at each location that can then be entered into drawings throughout the night. An art scavenger hunt will also ensure people keep their eyes peeled.

There is no fee or admission unless you choose to purchase trinkets or art gifts from the various participants. For example, you can make a glass art piece for $10 at The Art Gallery -- Studio.

A map will be available at each participating location.

If your location has art on display and you would like to be listed on the map for the night, contact Leann Porrello at [email protected]. As of print time, there are nine locations listed for the evening.

To keep up to date on participating locations, you can follow the JCMO Art Around Town event page on Facebook.
