LATHROP -- The Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Freshmen went 2-1 this past weekend in the 2022 Herrick Memorial Jamboree at Lathrop High School.
In the four-team, round-robin format, the Post 5 Freshmen opened with a 13-5 win against Trenton Post 31, then lost 13-2 to the Overbrook (Kan.) Post 239 Bombers. Jefferson City finished the tournament with an 11-10 victory against the Herrick Memorial Post 626 Owls.
In Saturday's opener against Trenton, Jefferson City scored nine runs in the top of the second inning -- sending 14 batters to the plate -- in the five-inning run-rule victory.
Carson Rustemeyer had a two-run single in the second inning, while Grant Hollis, Sam Schulte and Braden Wrye each had RBI singles.
Rustemeyer went 3-for-3 with three RBI, adding an RBI double in the third inning. Brady Kemna also drove in two runs for the Post 5 Freshmen.
Rustemeyer was also the winning pitcher for Jefferson City. In four innings, he allowed five runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Wrye pitched the fifth inning, striking out one.
In Saturday's second game against Overbrook Post 239, the two teams were tied at 1 through three innings. The Bombers scored 12 runs in the next three innings, including seven runs in the sixth inning, to pull away to a run-rule victory.
Evan McCullough had a double, one of the Post 5 Freshmen's six hits, while Sam Schulte and Hollis each drove in a run.
In Sunday's finale, Jefferson City and Herrick Memorial Post 626 were tied at 5 through six innings. The Owls jumped ahead with five runs in the top of the seventh.
The Post 5 Freshmen answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Sam Schulte started the scoring with a one-out RBI single, then Colten Scheulen followed with a two-run single to center field, cutting the deficit to 10-8.
Scheulen scored on a sacrifice fly to center field to make it a one-run game. Then Trevor Schulte, facing a 3-2 count with two outs, doubled to left field, scoring Wrye as the tying run and Jaden Rackers as the winning run.
Scheulen went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Sam Schulte had two hits and two RBI. McCullough had two hits and three runs scored, Rackers and Kemna each had two hits and Trevor Schulte drove in two runs. Nolan DeMilia added one hit and one RBI.
McCullough pitched the first 6⅔ innings for the Post 5 Freshmen, striking out 10 and walking one. Brock Buhr recorded the final out of the top of the seventh to get credit for the win.
The Post 5 Freshmen have an 11-1 record this summer, winning their first 10 games of the season. Jefferson City started the season by winning the St. Charles Memorial Day Wood Bat Tournament and went 4-0 in the Willard Tournament.
