Even with additional time to get the needed funds, organizers for a potential air show in Jefferson City said they could not reach the goal needed to make the show a reality.

"I want to send out a sincere 'Thank You' to everyone who attempted to bring the Show Me State Air Show to Jefferson City," said SMSAS coordinator Penny Smith, "whether through financial support, volunteering or general assistance."

Originally, the non-for-profit group had set June 10 as the fundraising deadline. Then, after talking with some potential donors, they extended the deadline to Sunday.

But they did not reach the fundraising goal of $150,000 for this year's show. This means the Aug. 27-28 show at the Jefferson City Memorial Airport is canceled.

The effort to get a show was due to the popularity of past air shows; Smith said the city had been talking about holding an air show in 2019, but the tornado hit that May and flooding destroyed the terminal building at the airport. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020 and that took away any plans for a show, she said.

This show would have been three hours long with 10,000-14,000 people expected to attend the two-day event.

"Now we will immediately start the sponsorship drive for the show in 2023," Smith said.
