MAD camp begins next month

The Music, Art and Dance Camp will take place in July, offering campers a chance to explore and experience the Slavic region and culture.

MAD Camp takes place from July 25-29 for children ages 4-12. Children will be divided by their ages into small groups paired with a camp counselor.

The camp will be at Wesley United Methodist Church in Jefferson City.

The campers will experience five classes each day. A vocal music class will allow them to sing traditional songs from a variety of Slavic countries. A Musikgarten class will teach campers how to play instruments and music games.

Two art classes are offered each day, letting the children learn about art from Slavic countries and make their own art pieces in that style. Dance classes will teach campers traditional and creative dances from Slavic cultures.

The camp culminates with a dance and music performance July 29, when campers will showcase what they learned during the course of the week.

MAD Camp began in 2009, and a different culture has been highlighted each year. Previous selections include Australia, Africa, India and South America.

One of the founding members of the camp is Helen Haynes, who teaches Musikgarten at the camp.

Haynes said the Slavic culture was selected last summer because it is a region of the world they have not previously taught.

"We try to provide fine arts and a family friendly exploration of the given culture," Haynes said.

MAD Camp has grown significantly in the 12 years it has been offered, Haynes said. Seventeen campers attended the first year, with 80 being the highest attendance so far. This year, 40-50 campers are expected to attend, Haynes said.

The final day for registration is June 30. If spots are still available after the deadline, more campers will be admitted but be charged a late fee.
