CALIFORNIA, Mo. -- The California Nutrition Center is hosting its first-ever pitch card tournament.

The tournament will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at 107 W. Versailles Ave., California.

Pitch is a popular game among those who gather at the California Nutrition Center.

"A lot of our participants play cards either before or after lunch, and some of them play the game of pitch. So we thought it would be fun to host a tournament," said Kim Drummond, lead center administrator.

The tournament will consist of two-member teams, costing $20 per team. Walk-ins will be able to sign up for the event starting at 5:30 p.m., and the tournament will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. The space can hold up to 48 teams, and snacks and refreshments will be provided to each team.

The California Nutrition Center is welcoming people of any age from Central Missouri to come and enjoy the game and visit with people from the area.

"It's designed for people to get out of the heat, and come and have an evening of fun and play this game called pitch," Drummond said.

The top three teams will win cash prizes, and the rest of the proceeds from the tournament will benefit the California Nutrition Center.

The California Nutrition Center is a senior activity center with a lunch nutrition center for people over 60 years old. They are open for lunch from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays, and they frequently host events, activities and fundraisers.
