Lincoln University graduated 99 students in December

Staying consistent with 2020, Lincoln University graduated 99 students last December.

Nursing, business administration and wellness were the top three most common programs for the recent graduates, which consisted of 82 undergraduate students and 17 graduate students.

Jennifer Benne, interim vice president for academic affairs and provost, said almost all degree programs were represented by the graduates at some level.

The university also had 99 students graduate in December 2020. It then graduated 196 students in spring 2021 -- 169 undergraduates and 27 graduate students. Prior to that, Lincoln graduated 237 students in spring 2020.

For the past decade, the university's enrollment and graduation rates have steadily declined.

In response, university administration has embarked on a sweeping effort to boost the number of students coming to campus and help them stay until graduation.

Going into the fall 2021 semester, Benne said Lincoln had just more than 100 students on academic probation, which means they fell below a 2.0 GPA and were at risk of suspension if academic performance didn't improve within the semester.

Academic probation also puts financial aid and many students' ability to afford Lincoln in jeopardy.

Of the roughly 100 students on academic probation, Benne said the university retained 55, and half of those 55 have returned to good academic standing before the end of the semester.

Now, Lincoln has more than 160 students on academic probation.

Last year, the university implemented a new approach to assist at-risk students, which divides the group into three smaller sections based on GPA.

Each group is assigned a staff retention specialist within the Student Success Center to provide support and tutoring on academic skills.

"I think splitting them up into those groups has been highly successful," Benne said.

Benne said it's usual for Lincoln to have more students on academic probation ahead of the spring semester and the past two semesters fall within the university's average of 100-150 students on academic probation.

This spring, each group will have about 50 students and one retention specialist providing assistance.
