Date set for first official Room at the Inn shelter

Jefferson City Room at the Inn is scheduled to start serving people in February.

JCRATI is a volunteer-staffed coalition of community members who are providing a warm, safe shelter for people to stay overnight when weather conditions reach life-threatening levels.

Catholic Charities of Central and Northern Missouri has agreed to let the coalition use part of its building at 1015 Edmonds St. for overnight stays.

JCRATI will operate its shelter 7 p.m.-7 a.m. each night.

The first night the group will offer shelter will be Feb. 1.

More volunteers are needed through the winter months. Volunteers must be 18 or older for morning and evening shifts. They must be 23 or older for overnight shifts.

Organizers will conduct volunteer walk-through training at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Catholic Charities.

Volunteers gained valuable experience helping the Salvation Army of Jefferson City during the past week, a JCRATI Facebook post said.

After a COVID-19 outbreak at the Salvation Army Center of Hope, some emergency shelter had to temporarily move. Building Community Bridges a nonprofit focused on serving youths and families in its community, hosted the emergency shelter through Thursday night.

The shelter was scheduled to return to the Center of Hope today.
