Helias Catholic High School announced Thursday afternoon that classes will not be in session on Friday due to a staff shortage. Classes are scheduled to resume on Wednesday, Jan. 19.

This is a change from the school's earlier announcement, reported below.

Helias Catholic High School announced temporary changes to its COVID-19 policies in light of a recent increase in cases in the school.

The school will not be in session Tuesday after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

"As the number of active COVID-19 cases among our school population has increased notably in recent days, we hope that this four-day break will allow our students, faculty and staff sufficient time outside the school environment to minimize potential exposure to others and to return well rested next Wednesday," the school said in an announcement on its website. "Our staff will use the additional day to deep-clean the school facility."

Starting today, masks will be required for all faculty, staff and students in common areas and anywhere a social distance of 3 feet can't be maintained. Students should bring their own masks, the a nnouncement said.

Helias will also require those who test positive or are close contacts of positive cases stay home for five days after symptoms appear or five days after the positive test if the person is asymptomatic.

"Individuals in such a situation would be permitted to return to school only if their symptoms have completely resolved and would adhere to strict use of a mask or face covering while in the school building for at least 10 days following the onset of symptoms or positive test," the announcement said.

The release said this would bring Helias' requirements into closer alignment with CDC guidelines.
