Upcoming street music will support food bank

A celebration in downtown Jefferson City will raise money for the food bank next week.

The inaugural River Road Music on Madison event will feature music from Five Turn Knot (5TK), a party band that plays rock, country and pop music.

The event begins at 6 p.m. May 6 in the 200 block of Madison Street. Music begins at 7:30 p.m.

Food and beverage trucks from Pizza Underground, Shrunken Head Mobile Bar and Tropical Drinks, Gumbo Bottoms Alehaus and Rebel Tacos will be available.

The evening will feature $3 beverage wristbands, with all proceeds (from the wristbands) going toward the Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri. Wristbands are required for people to have open containers on the street in Jefferson City (unless a business's license allows for one). People still have to buy their beverages.

Jami Wade, regional coordinator for the food bank, said 5TK usually brings out a pretty big crowd.

"(The evening) will be much like a Thursday Night Live," Wade said. "We would love to see a huge turnout."

Music on Madison will fund another fundraiser, the inaugural Hope for Heroes 5k, through downtown Jefferson City.

Hope for Heroes benefits the VIP Veteran Pack Program. The program provides nutrition to food-insecure veterans, according to the Food Bank website -- www.sharefoodbringhope.org/hope5k. Packs include ready-to-eat entrees, soup, fruits and vegetables, and toiletries, Wade said.

The Food Bank distributes the packs in 13 counties, but would like to do so in all 32 counties it serves. In Jefferson City, the Food Bank distributes packs at First Christian Church and Building Community Bridges.

Preregister for the 5K on the website. Pre-registration for the 5K ends Sunday. Check-in for the race is at 8 a.m. June 25 at its starting point, the Veterans Memorial at the Missouri state Capitol.
